Hope

Where are you finding hope today?

Lately, I've been finding unexpected hope in a beautiful duet cover of Joni Mitchell's song "Both Sides Now", performed by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles. I’ve always loved the original by Mitchell, and with Sara Bareilles being a frequent feature on my playlists, Spotify recommended this new duet. It feels as if Spotify—or maybe the universe, or perhaps even God—knew I needed this song right now.

For the past few days, it’s been a constant companion: playing as I fall asleep, during my moments of prayer and meditation, and on repeat in the car. Somehow, the combination of Joni Mitchell’s introspective lyrics with the harmonious voices of Groban and Bareilles has brought me an unexpected sense of hope and peace in this season of high anxiety and uncertainty.

The song’s lyrics, touching on uncertainty in love and life’s inevitable questions and mysteries, invite me into a place of trust and acceptance. It’s a gentle reminder that, while we may not have all the answers, we can find hope and comfort in simply being present.

I’d love to hear how you are finding hope in these times. What lifts you up today, what brings you peace as you look toward tomorrow? All we can do is be present now, pray and breathe through each new day, and trust that God is with us in it all. (And if you haven’t yet, please vote tomorrow!) No matter what anyone says, God’s presence is bigger than you, me, or any election.

So, where are you finding hope today? Here’s a passage from the song that’s been especially meaningful for me:

"Well, something's lost, but something's gained

In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now

From win and lose and still somehow

It's life's illusions I recall

I really don't know life at all."

– Joni Mitchell, 1966
